There’s no doubt that in this day and age, social media is essential to a restaurants success. It doesn’t matter if you’re a chain, a momma and pappa cafe, a cupcakery, a food truck, or a concession stand for one, you need to be up on that internet, making moves. Consider it the great equalizer, allowing smaller brands and independents to take on the giants of the industry. At least locally, that is.

Restaurant Social Media Index (RSMI) has released a list of the overall top 100 restaurant social media brands, based on activity in the December-ended fourth quarter of 2011. The number one spot went to Starbucks, followed by McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Chipolte, Chick-fil-A, Arby’s, Pinkberry, Peet’s Coffee and Tea, KFC, and Outback Steakhouse. Judging from the results, the mega-chain-world-dominators still reign (Starbucks was number one last year), but smaller dogs like Peet’s Cooffe and Tea are biting at their heels.

The RSMi was developed to provide learnings that will help restaurants become more robust and effective in their use of social media, digital content, and brand development.
